Ingredients
  

Coney Sauce
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 0.5 small onion finely minced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 8 oz tomato sauce
  • 0.5 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp onion powder
  • 0.5 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • salt and black pepper to taste
Assembly
  • 8 all-beef hot dogs
  • 8 split-top hot dog buns
  • 2 tbsp butter for buns
  • 1 cup white onion finely diced
  • yellow mustard for serving

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Medium saucepan
  • Wooden spoon
  • Grill or grill pan

Method
 

  1. Melt butter and sauté onion until soft.
  2. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  3. Brown ground beef, breaking into very fine crumbles.
  4. Stir in remaining sauce ingredients.
  5. Simmer 25 to 30 minutes until thickened.
  6. Grill hot dogs until browned.
  7. Toast buttered buns.
  8. Place hot dogs in buns and top with Coney sauce, mustard, and diced onions.
