Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

Traditional Hungarian cabbage rolls filled with seasoned pork, beef, and rice, simmered in a rich tomato-paprika sauce until perfectly tender.

Ingredients
  

Cabbage Rolls
  • 1 large green cabbage
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 0.5 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup white rice uncooked
  • 1 onion finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp Hungarian paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped
Sauce
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion diced
  • 2 tbsp Hungarian paprika
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp sugar

Equipment

  • Large stock pot
  • Dutch oven
  • Mixing bowls
  • Cutting board

Method
 

  1. Boil cabbage and remove softened leaves.
  2. Trim thick ribs from leaves.
  3. Mix pork, beef, rice, onion, garlic, paprika, salt, pepper, egg, and parsley.
  4. Place filling on cabbage leaves and roll tightly.
  5. Cook onion in olive oil until softened.
  6. Add paprika, tomato sauce, broth, tomato paste, and sugar.
  7. Arrange cabbage rolls in pot and cover with sauce.
  8. Simmer covered for 90 minutes.
  9. Serve hot with sauce and parsley garnish.

Notes

For authentic flavor, add smoked sausage or sauerkraut during cooking. The rolls taste even better the next day.
