Ingredients

Chocolate Cupcakes
  • 1.75 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.75 cups granulated sugar
  • 0.75 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder
  • 1.5 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp fine salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk room temperature
  • 0.5 cup neutral vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 0.75 cup hot water not boiling when added
Green Vanilla Buttercream
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar sifted if lumpy
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tbsp milk add gradually
  • 1-2 drops green gel food coloring add to reach a muted grass-green color
Graveyard Decorations
  • 8 oval sandwich cookies for tombstones
  • 10 chocolate sandwich cookies crushed into dirt crumbs
  • 1 tube black decorating icing for writing RIP on tombstones
  • 6 gummy worms optional
  • 8 candy pumpkins optional

Equipment

  • Two 12-cup muffin pans
  • 24 cupcake liners
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Hand mixer or stand mixer
  • Wire rack
  • Large food-safe serving board or tray
  • Offset spatula
  • Piping bag (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two 12-cup muffin pans with 24 cupcake liners.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until evenly combined.
  3. In a second bowl, whisk eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir just until combined.
  4. Gradually stir in hot water until the batter is smooth and thin. Divide among the 24 liners, filling each about two-thirds full.
  5. Bake for 18–22 minutes, rotating pans if necessary, until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
  6. Cool the cupcakes in the pans for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely, approximately 45 minutes total.
  7. Beat softened butter until smooth. Add powdered sugar in batches, then vanilla and 2 tablespoons milk. Beat until fluffy, adding remaining milk only if needed. Tint with green gel food coloring.
  8. Arrange the cooled cupcakes close together in a 4-by-6 rectangle on a large food-safe serving board or tray. Spread green buttercream across the tops to create one connected grassy surface, gently bridging gaps between cupcakes.
  9. Write RIP or simple crosses on 8 oval cookies using black decorating icing. Crush 10 chocolate sandwich cookies into fine crumbs, then sprinkle them in little mounds and paths over the frosting.
  10. Press the decorated cookie tombstones gently into the frosted cupcake tops. Add gummy worms and candy pumpkins if using. Serve by letting guests pull away individual cupcakes from the display.

Notes

Makes one 4-by-6 pull-apart display of 24 cupcakes. Allow cupcakes to cool fully before decorating; warm cakes will melt the frosting. Set cookie tombstones in place close to serving time for the crispest texture. Nutrition is an estimate per decorated cupcake and varies with candy and portion size.
