Ingredients

Tortilla Chips
  • 8 flour tortillas medium, approximately 8 inches each
  • 2 tbsp olive oil for brushing
Smoky Lime Seasoning
  • 0.75 tsp smoked paprika
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.25 tsp ground cumin
  • 0.5 tsp fine sea salt adjust to taste
  • 1 tsp fresh lime zest finely grated

Equipment

  • Halloween-shaped cookie cutters
  • 2 large baking sheets
  • Parchment paper
  • Pastry brush
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Measuring spoons
  • Thin spatula
  • Wire cooling rack

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper and position the oven racks in the upper and lower thirds.
  2. Combine smoked paprika, garlic powder, ground cumin, and fine sea salt in a small bowl. Mix thoroughly and set aside. Keep the fresh lime zest separate until after baking.
  3. Place flour tortillas on a clean cutting board. Use Halloween-shaped cookie cutters, approximately 2–3 inches wide, to cut out bats, ghosts, pumpkins, or other shapes. Repeat with the remaining tortillas. Save leftover scraps for baking separately.
  4. Arrange the tortilla shapes in a single layer on the prepared baking sheets, leaving a little space between each piece. Lightly brush both sides with olive oil, distributing the oil evenly across the batch.
  5. Sprinkle approximately half of the smoky seasoning over one side of the tortilla shapes. Turn them gently and distribute the remaining seasoning over the other side.
  6. Bake for approximately 8–12 minutes, gently flipping the chips halfway through. Switch the baking sheets between racks for even cooking. Begin checking after 8 minutes and remove smaller pieces early if necessary. The chips should have lightly golden edges and mostly firm centers.
  7. Transfer the baked tortilla chips to a wire cooling rack. Allow them to cool for approximately 5 minutes to develop their final crisp texture.
  8. Sprinkle lightly with finely grated fresh lime zest. Arrange on a serving platter and serve with guacamole, salsa, queso, or another favorite dip.

Notes

Use thin flour tortillas for the easiest cutting and crispest results. Baking time varies depending on tortilla thickness and cookie cutter size. Check smaller shapes frequently because narrow edges can brown faster. Allow chips to cool completely before storing in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days for best quality. To restore crispness, warm at 325°F (165°C) for 3–5 minutes and cool again. For a sweet variation, replace savory seasoning with cinnamon sugar.
